How to Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Microsoft 365
Pre-requisites
- You will need an Apple (IOS) or Android (Samsung, HTC, etc) phone.
- You need to install the Microsoft Authenticator App, or similar (Google Authenticator etc).
You can install these apps at any time from the various App Stores.
Set up the MFA Authentication
When you have received notification from IT that Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) has been enabled on your account, you can begin to set up your account.
- Log in to Microsoft Outlook Web – https://outlook.office.com/
- You will be prompted for more information. Click Next

- Change the settings to Mobile App and Use Verification Code. Then Click Set up.

- IMPORTANT. To use an App other than Microsoft Authenticator, Click Configure app without notifications. DO NOT scan the code here.

- The Code will change, and you can now scan the code with the Authenticator app of your choice. Also note down the Secret Key and store that for your reference.
Scan the code on your app, and the entry will be added. Click Next.

- You will be returned to the previous security verification screen, and the Set up button will be greyed out. Click Next.

- Enter the 6 digit number shown on your authenticator app and click Verify.
This number changes every minute.

- Enter your mobile number or an alternate contact number which can be used in case you do not have access to your mobile phone. Click Next.

- Copy down the displayed app password. This is used if you are not able to connect your account to an app that does not support MFA.

- Click Done to complete the set up.

When you log in to Microsoft 365, you may be prompted to provide additional security information. Open the Authenticator app on your phone and key in the verification code as needed.
